As in the two previous years, the Portuguese Access Class Association (APCA) organised a series of three regattas in 2012 to select the best Access 2,3 sailors to represent the country in International events.
After holding selection regattas in Cascais in March and in Povoa de Varzim in May, Funchal, capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira, was the location of the 2012 National Championships from June 7-9.
The Championship was very well organised by the Clube Naval do Funchal, as part of its celebrations of its 60th Anniversary, and included 3 days of racing, a Conference which was attended by members of the National Portuguese and Regional Governments, and a prize giving dinner.
Racing took place in the beautiful Bay of Funchal, and was easily visible from the waterfront - excellent viewing for the thousands of tourists who visit this beautiful island.
The event was dominated by light winds and choppy seas, which made things difficult for the sailors and Race Committee alike, but the 5 completed races enabled Pedro Reis from C N Cascais, current Access 2,3 European Champion, to renew the Portuguese title, seconded by Fernando Pinto from ENVA (Porto) with José Cavalheiro from Viana do Castelo Sailing Club 3rd, out of a total of 16 entries. Luisa Graça of ENVA was 4th and won the Ladies Prize.
